Windows 11 version 22H2 could RTM on May 24

The next Windows 11 feature update is nearly complete, according to Microsoft leakster WalkingCat. Windows 11 version 22H2 is expected to reach RTM status on May 24.

What RTM means for Windows 11

It used to be – the days before Windows 10 – RTM meant that Microsoft had finished a version of Windows and was ready to ship it to OEMs. Indeed, it means release to manufacturers.

Things don’t work that way anymore, since Microsoft introduced Windows as a service model. The company will talk about the fact that Windows updates are never done, and it’s also true that OEMs no longer receive a special copy of the operating system to pre-install on new hardware. Although Microsoft doesn’t publicly call it RTM, it’s a term we often only use to describe the version that will eventually ship as a feature update.

This is the build we expect to see on May 24. Of course, things could change. There could be a bug that could push it back, which we’ve already seen.

What happens after RTM

Once we get the so-called final version for Windows 11 version 22H2, it does not mean that the update is about to be released. This is when Microsoft will start managing it with cumulative updates.

This is exactly what happened with the original version of Windows 11, and the timeline is the same. Windows 11 had already reached this critical milestone when it was announced, so all we have to test after that are cumulative updates to build 22000. We’ll see those same kinds of updates with build 22H2, and then there will be a Liberation fall.

You can always test new Windows 11 features

Windows 11 version 22H2 will be available in the beta channel, and testing is going to be boring. Of course, boring means things are good and bug-free. If you want the excitement of new features, you can still get it. All you have to do is enroll your PC in the Dev channel. You will get all versions of rs_prerelease after that.

Speaking of the different channels and features, Microsoft hasn’t even told us specifically what will be included in the 22H2 build of Windows 11. We have a general idea based on what’s currently in the beta channel, but there has no warranty. Hopefully we will find out on May 24.
