Two members of the Kentucky governor’s cabinet resign

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said Executive Cabinet Secretary J. Michael Brown and Acting Cabinet Secretary for Economic Development Larry Hayes will retire from state government.

John Hicks will assume the role of Executive Cabinet Secretary while continuing to serve as State Budget Director. Beshear has appointed Jeff Noel as Cabinet Secretary for Economic Development.

At a press conference Thursday, Beshear thanked Brown for helping lead the executive branch through multiple natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic. Brown accepted a position at Simmons College of Kentucky, a historically black private college in Louisville.

“He’s been an integral part of the Kentucky team, I call him a wonderful friend,” Beshear said.

The Governor also congratulated Hayes on his more than 20 years of service, crediting him with helping “the Commonwealth break all economic development records on the books in 2021”.

“Larry has always worked behind the scenes to move Kentucky forward – and the Commonwealth is a better place to live, work and do business because of his work,” Beshear said. “We wish him the best as he takes the time to spend with his family and grandchildren.
