Top US general to visit Helsinki ahead of military maneuvers

Chairman of the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Marc Milleyis due to visit Finland on Friday as part of a European tour.

Milley is due to arrive from London, where he met with representatives of the “Five Eyes” intelligence alliance, which includes the UK, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. He also attended celebrations for Queen Elizabeth IIPlatinum Jubilee.

On Friday, Milley is due to speak with the president Sauli Niinisto and Minister of Defense Antti Kaikkonen (Cen) following Finland’s request to join NATO with neighboring Sweden.

Finland and Sweden join NATO naval exercise

The next day, Milley will travel to Stockholm, where he will meet the King of Sweden Carl XVI Gustav. He will also join the Swedish Minister of Defense Pierre Hultqvist observe joint military maneuvers between NATO and the Swedish Navy.

Starting Sunday, the Finnish Navy and Air Force are taking part in the international exercise Baltops 22 on the Baltic Sea. Some 200 members of the Finnish Navy will take part in the exercise from June 5 to 17.

“The purpose of the exercise is to develop the interoperability of the United States, NATO and partner nations in joint air and sea operations and amphibious operations,” the Finnish Defense Forces said in a statement on Wednesday. .
