The Pixel 6a will launch in India, Google’s first phone in the country in almost 2 years

One of the biggest challenges facing Google’s Pixel lineup is its limited distribution, but it looks like Google is finally stepping things up a bit. The Google Pixel 6a is going to be available in India, the first smartphone sold in the country by Google in nearly two years.

Google’s Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are available in 12 countries, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, United Kingdom and United States. The next Pixel 6a, according to Google’s documentation, will arrive in those same regions and return to Puerto Rico after Google skipped US territory with its Pixel 5a.

But talk to Android Central, the company also confirmed that the Pixel 6a will be sold in India “later in 2022”. The delayed launch will mark Google’s first release in India in nearly two years. The company’s latest new smartphone for India was the 2020 Pixel 4a which also made its delayed debut in India in October 2020.

The Pixel 4a has apparently been a hit in India, to the point that Google said in early 2021 that it intended to “focus more” on the Indian market. That didn’t work out though, as the Pixel 5a was only launched in the US and Japan, and the Pixel 6 series also skipped the Indian market due to “supply issues”.

With the more powerful Tensor chip under the hood and an affordable price to boot, Google could do well in the Indian market which today is dominated by Xiaomi, Samsung, OnePlus and others.

The exact price of the Pixel 6a in India is yet to be confirmed.
