The MTSU shooting at the Murphy Center was reported on campus on Wednesday


One person is dead and another is in critical but stable condition after a shooting Wednesday night outside Middle Tennessee State University’s Murphy Center.

Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Dan Goodwin did not release the identity of the person killed during an 11 p.m. news conference on the outskirts of campus.

The shooting happened shortly before 9 p.m. outside the Murphy Center near the tennis courts at the end of Riverdale High’s graduation ceremony.

The shooter remains at large, Goodwin said.

“Tonight’s shooting at Middle Tennessee State University is a tragedy for our community. We mourn with the family who lost a loved one and the victim who was injured,” Goodwin said.

A shooting occurred Wednesday night on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University after graduation from Riverdale High School, leaving one dead and one in critical condition.

The university posted on Facebook around 9:15 p.m. Wednesday evening warning people to leave the Murphy Center immediately and shelter in place if they could not leave the area safely.

Rutherford County school spokesman James Evans said Riverdale High will be closed on Thursday and a decision will be made later regarding Friday classes.

Police are at the scene after officials reported a shooting on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University on Wednesday night.

MTSU began on-campus summer school on Monday, about a week and a half after graduation, and the majority of students have left for summer vacation.

They asked that any suspicious activity be reported to MTSU police at 615-898-2424.
