Silent Hill 2 Remake Rumors: Team Bloober CEO Declines to Comment, Says New Project ‘Will Always Be a Team Bloober Title’

Following rumors that horror game developer Bloober Team is remaking the legendary Silent Hill 2, CEO Piotr Babieno said he couldn’t comment, but hopes to make an announcement on the company’s future plans. business “as soon as we can”. He added that his unannounced project “will always be a Bloober Team title”, even if it’s done in partnership with another company. Babieno also explained that future Bloober games will be bigger and more gameplay-focused than in the past, and won’t be “walking simulation” type experiences.

Speaking to IGN at the Polish Digital Dragons games conference, Babieno addressed the rumors (first reported by influencer Nate the hate then journalist Jeff Grubb) about a remake of Silent Hill 2 saying:

“We can’t comment on anything we do because we value our relationship with our partners, of course. So we can’t [say] anything. We will make an announcement on our future plans as soon as possible. Then you’ll know a lot more.” Laughing, he added, “Officially.”

Bloober Team entered into a partnership with Konami, owner of the Silent Hill series, last year. Since then, several reports have linked the developer (who developed horror games Layers of Fear, Observer, Blair Witch and The Medium) with a Silent Hill project. He was even forced to deny that some of his unused game concepts were intended titles for Silent Hill. Bloober previously confirmed that it is working on two titles simultaneously, one with Konami, while another, to be released by Private Division, is a new IP. Babieno tells me that a third title is in pre-production.

Later in the interview, I asked Babieno about the company’s experience working with a licensee in the Blair Witch case, and the CEO briefly referenced one of the upcoming projects of Bloober, clarifying that his company’s approach is to make games on their own terms, even if it’s in someone else’s franchise.

“I would say it’s difficult to work with someone who [owns an IP you’re working on]but we still speak with these licensors, [saying] “Guys, we would like to use your license, but we would like to tell our own story.” If we’re not able to tell our own story, if we don’t have creative freedom, it doesn’t make sense, because Bloober Team won’t make a great game,” Babieno said. “If you’re in jail , you cannot fly. That’s why we only try [make] these titles in which we feel, ‘OK, it will be a Bloober Team game, not someone [else’s].’ So even on the project we can’t talk [about]it will always be a Bloober Team title.

Babieno didn’t specify that it was a reference to the Konami title, but it seems likely given that Bloober’s Private Division game is a new IP. If so, and Bloober is working on Silent Hill, Babieno’s words could be interpreted to mean that the company is applying its own ideas to Silent Hill 2, or alternatively that its Silent Hill game is actually a new story from the series entirely. The CEO did not provide further comment on these lines.

Speaking more generally about the future of Bloober Team, Babieno said the company aims to change the types of games it makes, while staying true to the dark, psychologically focused areas it specializes in.

“There are a lot of people on our team who would like to make bigger games, with more gameplay, with game mechanics [we haven’t used before] because most of our past titles felt like experience, right? It was more about atmosphere, story, not necessarily gameplay. […] We would like to make games that tell our stories based on game mechanics. So you can expect every one of our future titles to have a lot of game mechanics. Those titles will be bigger.

He added that Bloober’s games would continue to move away from the “walking simulator” approach of its earlier hits, such as Layers of Fear.

“It’s not a huge leap, it’s more of an evolution, but right now we’re well prepared to make games similar to Hellblade, to name a few. [one example]. But I would say that we will always have our DNA – these games will always be part of the Bloober Team legacy, and they will be bigger. We will tell stories [through gameplay], it’s not going to be about stepping on similar types of experiences in the future, but still, the topic, those feelings that we would like [we would like our fans to feel]they will stay,” Babieno said.

Aside from rumors of a Silent Hill 2 remake, footage of what would be an all-new Silent Hill was revealed last week – and quickly removed after a copyright claim. The removal appears to give credence to their authenticity, although Konami has not commented.

Silent Hill 2 remains one of the most beloved games ever released.
