Pirates acquire infielder Chang from Guardians

CLEVELAND — The Guardians traded infielder Yu Chang to the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash on Monday.

Chang had been designated for an assignment last week.

Once a promising prospect for Cleveland, Chang, 26, has played just four games for the Guardians this season and has struck out seven in 10 at bats. He also ran out of time after being placed on the COVID-19 list.

Chang has batted .228 with nine homers and 39 RBIs in 89 games for Cleveland in 2021. His strong finish — seven homers and 25 RBIs — over the past three months has put him in position to earn a utility spot this season.

However, Owen Miller’s strong spring training pushed Chang aside and he will now be making a fresh start with the Pirates.

Chang hit .208 with 10 home runs and 46 RBIs in 131 games in four seasons with Cleveland.
