One person was killed and five others were injured in a shooting at a church in Orange County, California, police said.
“We have arrested one person and recovered a weapon that may be involved,” the Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) announced on Twitter on Sunday.
All of the victims are adults, and four were “seriously injured” and rushed to hospital, the OCSO said.
The 911 call regarding the shooting at the Geneva Presbyterian Church was made at 1:26 p.m., police said.
The shooting took place in the town of Laguna Woods, about 45 miles southeast of Los Angeles, an area with a large elderly population.
Orange County Fire Department said they have emergency medical crews on the scene and have transferred several people to the hospital.
The exact circumstances that led to the shooting remain unknown.
The Independent contacted the sheriff’s office for more information.
“My understanding is that this all happened inside the church building,” a police spokesman said. The New York Times. “We’re trying to figure out what kind of service was going on at the time.”
The shooting took place on the 24000 block of El Toro Road.
Photos on social networks showed three fire engines outside an area church.
The FBI helps with the intervention on the scene, the Los Angeles Times reported. The same goes for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office also said it was closely monitoring the incident.
“No one should be afraid to go to their place of worship,” the governor’s office wrote in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the victims, the community and all those affected by this tragic event.”
Cindy Frazier, 65, was out shopping when she heard the sirens of numerous law enforcement officials heading towards the church, initially thinking it was a local fire.
“I thought it was the fire coming back, but it was just one after another,” the Laguna Woods resident told the newspaper. “It’s so heartbreaking. Why? Why our community.
The shooting came just a day after 10 people were killed in a white supremacist mass shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York.
“This is shocking and disturbing news, especially less than a day after a mass shooting in Buffalo,” U.S. Representative Katie Porter, whose district is nearby, wrote on Twitter on Sundy. “This shouldn’t be our new normal. I will work hard to support the victims and their families.
Police will address the public at 5:00 p.m. PT.
