Amazon boss Jeff Bezos said the country’s new Disinformation Governance Council should take a look at the White House after a tweet from President Biden that tried to link the surge in inflation at the country’s corporate tax rate.
“The newly created misinformation board should review this tweet, or perhaps they should form a new, non-sequential board instead,” Bezos mocked in tweet late Friday night. “Increasing corporate taxes is a good thing to discuss. It is essential to discuss the control of inflation. Mixing them together is just a misdirection.
Inflation – which took off the moment President Biden entered the White House – jumped to 8.3% in April, approaching a 40-year high. Prices for basic commodities like food and gasoline have skyrocketed.
“Want to bring inflation down?” Biden asked in a tweet on Friday. “Let’s make sure the wealthiest companies pay their fair share.”
The Department of Homeland Security’s Disinformation Governance Council has come under heavy criticism for its stated goal of combating disinformation on social media.
Its director, Nina Jankowicz, has been derided as a partisan hack, who has publicly spoken about the ability for verified (and mostly left-leaning) Twitter users to “edit” others’ tweets on the platform.
