Image of Milky Way black hole marks new era in space science

Miles O’Brien:

Well, we have the selfie. The next step is the movie.

They’re going to try to increase the number of telescopes on Earth’s surface, so they can have another opportunity to image this black hole and others in more detail, enough detail to capture motion.

Basically, the exposure time was long enough that the movement around it, the gas that was swirling around this black hole, was blurred. It’s like photographing a waterfall in exposure time.

So with a few more telescopes on the surface of the earth, they should be able to freeze the action so to speak and create movies. And then maybe one day, they hope, we can put interferometers in space, these kind of twin telescopes, which will of course be much further apart, and which would virtually create a lens much bigger, and who knows what we’ll find then.
