Hun Sen to meet Cambodians ahead of ASEAN-US summit – Xinhua English.news.cn


ASEAN Chairman Prime Minister Hun Sen traveled to the United States to attend the special ASEAN-US summit on May 12-13 to commemorate the 45th anniversary of ASEAN-US dialogue relations . The event is the first special summit since 2016.

Hun Sen was greeted Tuesday morning at Phnom Penh International Airport by Interior Minister Sar Kheng, National Defense Minister Tea Banh and other senior government officials.

During a short layover on his special flight in Seoul, Hun Sen announced on social media that he would arrive in Washington DC around 5:30 p.m. and hold deliberations with the Cambodian community on May 10 and 11.

“I will have a meet-and-greet event with Cambodian communities in the United States on May 10 and 11, and I will follow the host’s schedule, then I will return on May 14,” her voicemail message on social media revealed.

The prime minister is expected to return to Phnom Penh on May 15.

Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters on Monday that she would check whether or not Mr Hun Sen will have a bilateral meeting with US President Joe Biden.

An invitation has been sent to ASEAN leaders – from Brunei to Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, as well as to the ASEAN Secretary General in Washington to attend the summit.

Jen said Thursday that Biden will host ASEAN leaders at the White House for dinner, and on Friday the president will participate in a summit with ASEAN leaders at the State Department to recognize the central role of the ASEAN in providing lasting solutions to the regions most pressing challenges and commemorating 45 years of U.S.-ASEAN relationship.

According to the Foreign Ministry, Hun Sen will also be received and hosted a bipartisan luncheon by Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi at the Capitol.

Hun Sen and ASEAN leaders will also meet with U.S. business leaders as well as Vice President Kamala Harris and U.S. cabinet secretaries, he added.
