Fall Guys is going free in June alongside the release of Switch and Xbox

UPDATE 11:30 p.m.: Following Fall Guys’ free announcement earlier this evening, developer Mediatonic has provided some additional details regarding the PC version, confirming that the game will be removed from Steam from June 21st – although existing users will be able to continue to play on Valve’s platform.

The news is not very surprising, of course; Epic Games acquired Mediatonic in 2021, and although the developer insisted that Fall Guys would “remain available on Steam” at the time, the money was there following a similar trajectory to Rocket League – which ended up abandon Steam in favor of Epic Games Store after it became free following an acquisition by Epic.

As if we are there; Starting June 21, when Fall Guys drops from Steam, new players will only be able to access the game by downloading its launcher from the Epic Games Store. Existing Steam users, however, will not be forced into a mandatory move and will be able to continue playing as before, with Mediaonic promising that the Steam version will “continue to receive all regular updates”, including new seasons, patches and fonctionnalities.

Fall Guys – Free for All Trailer.

ORIGINAL STORY 6:35 p.m.: Knockout battle royale game Fall Guys is going free-to-play starting June 21, developer Mediatonic has announced. Additionally, the change in monetization model will coincide with the game’s long-awaited release on Switch and Xbox, as well as the arrival of a new PlayStation 5 version and its debut on the Epic Games Store.

As part of its transition to free-to-play, Fall Guys – which celebrates its second anniversary later this year – will hit the reset button, and June 21 will see it relaunch with a new season that Mediatonic is calling Season 1: Free. For All, promising “stacks of new challenges and rewards”.

As with Rocket League before it, which also went free-to-play after being picked up by Epic Games, Fall Guys will adapt a monetization model that will be immediately familiar to Fortnite players. This means the arrival of a new paid premium Season Pass – purchasable with a new in-game currency known as Show-Bucks – which will accompany the existing free tier.

To ease the transition of Fall Guys from paid to free play – and to “thank the global community…for their support” – Mediatonic will give all existing players access to a special Legacy Pack, which includes various cosmetic items and the first free Season Pass.

Fall Guys will be available on Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, and the Epic Games Store starting June 21, and cross-play and cross-progression will be supported on all platforms. Mediatonic has yet to discuss the game’s future on Steam, however – particularly if those who paid for it on Valve’s platform will have to head to the Epic Games Store if they want to continue playing – but I will update this story as more is shared.
