The airport, which will allow the operation of domestic and international flights, is expected to ease the pressure exerted by Cairo International Airport, boost one-day tourist programs and facilitate the movement of exports, said the minister of the aviation.

The new airport serves residents of Greater Cairo’s 6th of October and Sheikh Zayed districts, as well as the governorates of Fayoum and Beni Suef.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly stressed the importance of the project given the upcoming official opening of the new Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) overlooking the Giza Plateau.

Egypt has modernized the airport, which was officially inaugurated in January 2020, with the aim of receiving tourists coming to visit the pyramids and the GEM.

Minister Manar said the total size of the SPX has increased to 24,000 square meters and its accommodation capacity per hour has increased to 900 passengers.

Egypt has stepped up its efforts to revive tourism – a major source of foreign exchange for Egypt – and mitigate the impact of successive global crises on the sector, including the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
