3 dead after another US shooting in church parking lot

A A man shot and killed two women in the parking lot of an Iowa state church on Thursday, then turned the gun on himself, police said, adding three more deaths to the toll of a series of recent shootings that have rocked the United States.

The shooting in Iowa came shortly after President Joe Biden gave a major speech on gun violence following the mass shootings in Buffalo, New York; Uvalde, Texas, and Tulsa, Oklahoma in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, another shooting Thursday injured two people attending a funeral at Racine Cemetery in Wisconsin.

The shooting in Iowa took place outside Cornerstone Church, a fundamentalist Christian church east of the town of Ames, while a religious program was going on inside, said Nicholas Lennie, chief deputy of the Story County Sheriff’s Office.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they found all three dead, Lennie said, adding he could not provide identities or divulge what the relationship between them might have been.

“It appears to be an isolated incident with a single shooter,” Lennie said.

Moments earlier, Biden had urged Congress to ban assault weapons, expand background checks and implement other gun control measures to deal with mass shootings.

“Enough, enough!” the president said.

The United States has been rocked in recent weeks by mass shootings that have killed 10 black residents in upstate New York, 19 children and two teachers in Texas, and two doctors, a receptionist and a patient in Oklahoma.

In Racine, Wis., multiple shots were fired at a crowd of mourners attending a graveside funeral on Thursday, injuring two people, Racine Police Sgt. Kristi told reporters. Wilcox.

One victim was treated at a local hospital and released, the other was airlifted to a Milwaukee hospital, apparently with more serious injuries, Wilcox said. No suspects have been taken into custody.Reuters
