1 killed, dozens injured after Tornado lands in Gaylord

A tornado slammed into Gaylord during a thunderstorm on Friday afternoon, injuring dozens of people, killing at least one and leaving residents stunned.

The tornado touched down at 3:45 p.m. and lasted much longer than expected. It covered several miles in minutes, said National Weather Service meteorologist Jim Keysor. It started southwest of Gaylord and moved northeast, but the exact length and path has yet to be determined.

“For northern Michigan, it’s probably going to be quite a long and damaged road,” Keysor said. “(It wouldn’t be long if you) were in tornado alley in the plains, but for northern Michigan where we don’t get a lot of tornadoes, it’s quite a long way.”

It tore through both residential and commercial areas. Michigan State Police have imposed a 7 p.m. curfew.
